The particular design of a deck, fence, or arbor is limited only by the imagination of the designer, the talent of the construction crew, and the budget of the client. Synthetic materials can give you the opportunity to build environmentally friendly decks as well as fences. Fences create and define outdoor spaces as well as provide privacy and security. Landscaping consists both of hardscapes, the paved and permanent elements, and greenscapes, plants, trees and shrubs. Landscape themes such as Natural, English, Formal, Japanese, and Modern identify not only your property but also your tastes and preferences. Color, form, line, scale, and texture are primary landscape design elements. Oakleaf-Landscape can help you decide what is best for you. Contact them at www.oakleaf-landscape.com. Lawns and landscaping provide that encouraging sign each spring that life is returning, and in summer, that lush green turf becomes an invitingly cool place in which to wriggle your toes. It's that time again, time to start thinking about spring and where you want to be with your lawn and yard. The Landscape Network hopes you'll find valuable tools and choose from our many resources on what will work best for your yard this year. In the Baltimore area ask the professionals at Pro Curb to help get your spring yard awakened in the right way.

When the leaves start to fall, pass up the leaf blower in favor of a good old-fashioned rake. In addition to being great exercise, raking leaves eliminates the noise, odor and pollution gas-powered leaf-blowers give off. Photo by Andrea Lani.
Properly maintaining your landscape is important, especially with winter right around the corner. Here are some ideas to keep your grass happy during winter months. As fall arrives, reseed areas as needed. Fall is a great time for new grass seed to take root. It also eliminates areas for weeds to grow in the spring. Fertilize one more time with a high nitrogen fertilizer to encourage root growth. Rake leaves and debris off your lawn in the fall. Be aggressive and rake out any areas where heavy thatch has built up. After the lawn has stopped growing, and before the snow flies, give your lawn one more cutting. Lower the mower deck to cut your lawn to about one inch. Try to do the final mowing with a bagger to pick up cut grass, stray leaves, and other debris. This will to leave less places for Snow mold to develop. Contact Rick Young Landscaping for other ideas for getting ready for winter or planning that new spring yard. Traffic and use dictate the width of a walkway. Four feet of width is enough to walk side-by-side, for instance, but overall, a walkway is wider and more formal than a path. Poured concrete has been the traditional material, but as more and more alternatives become available, plain concrete is yielding to ties, pavers, gravel and even tiles. DJ Landscape Construction can give you some great ideas too, check them out at www.djlandscape.com. Photo courtesy of DJ Landscape Construction.

your yard. Very early morning watering is ideal. Midday watering
